A visit to Old Salem Museums & Gardens during the Holiday Season is a step back to a time when the holidays were simpler, less stressful and more focused on faith and family. Traditional wreaths hang from the doors, lampposts and fence posts are wrapped in their winter greenery, the smell of fresh baked treats emanating from the bakery warm even the coldest nose, and the sound of music drifts through the air to draw you into the holiday spirit.

November 3, 5, 10, 12, 17, 19 – Puppet Show – “The Great Turkey Trot.”  Join Tom and Honeysuckle White as they trot a flock of turkeys to marketing Washington, DC where they have a surprising encounter with a beloved American President.  Puppet Show times are 11:00am and 1:00 pm and are included with an All-In-One ticket, or $2.00 per person - puppet show only. 

 

November 16 – A Moravian Sampler Christmas Museum Class – Join us for a delightful evening of traditional Moravian Christmas activities.  In this museum class, you will make your own hand-dipped beeswax candle, paint a Springerle cookie to adorn your tree, and create beautiful sheets of marbled paper.  Each of these activities has roots in the Christmas celebrations in early Salem.  At the end of the class, enjoy warm Ginger bread and spiced apple cider by the kitchen hearth.  Pre-registration is required by calling 336-721-7300.  Class is $20 for adults and children, $18 for Friends of Old Salem. 

 

November 19, 20, 26, 27 – Christmas by Candlelight 18th Century Tour - Take a guided tour by candlelight through the Historic District where the customs and traditions of an 18th century Salem Christmas will be brought to life through all of your senses.  The evening will include music, games, food and drink, and interacting with our staff to create your own special memories.  During the tour you will visit the Saal of the Single Brothers’ House and the Tavern.  This tour includes walking distances in a hilly area, standing outside, and standing for long periods of time.  The Tavern is not handicapped accessible.  It is recommended that you wear warm clothing and comfortable shoes.  Tours are available to a limited number of people and are booked on a first-come, first-served basis.  Please call 336-721-7350 to book your spot.  Tours will meet at the Winkler Bakery at 6:30 p.m., 7 p.m., 7:30 p.m. and 8 p.m.  $20/adult, $15/child (Friends of Old Salem: $18/$15).

 

November 20, 2010 - Holiday Wreath Classes

Embellish an evergreen wreath for your home with dired and fresh materials harvested from Salem's gardens! Classes are at 11am, 1pm and 2:30pm, $35 for adults and children.

December 1 – Concert – The Limestone College Choir and Jazz Ensemble perform holiday music at 12noon in the James A. Gray, Jr. Auditorium in the Old Salem Visitor Center, free. 

 

December 2, 2010 - Holiday Hearth Cooking Class - Puddings & Sweetmeats

Food has been a special part of seasonal celebrations for centuries.  Join us for an evening at the hearth to prepare and taste a variety of tasty treats from times past.  We will be exploring authentic recipes for puddings, both boiled and baked, and making marzipan sweetmeats to hang on the tree.  

Minimum age - 12 years old.

Class is 6--8:30pm, $35 for adults and children.

December 1, 3, 8, 10, 15, 17 – “Christmas in the Trenches.”  This is the story of soldiers on the battlefields of World War I who set aside their political differences and celebrated their common faith on Christmas Eve.  Puppet Show times are 11:00am and 1:00 pm and are included with an All-In-One ticket, or $2.00 per person - puppet show only.

December 8, 15, 22, 29 – Wednesday Noon Organ Recital Series – Join us for free concerts on the 1800 Tannenberg Organ at 12noon  in the James A. Gray, Jr. Auditorium in the Old Salem Visitor Center.
