Out of Bounds: King Nobuyoshi Godwin
King Nobuyoshi Godwin is an accomplished painter and sculptor who is autistic. He has a form of Synesthesia. Synesthesia is a perceptual phenomenon in which stimulation of one sensory or cognitive pathway leads to automatic, involuntary experiences in a second sensory or cognitive pathway. He joins objects such as letters, shapes, numbers or people’s names with a sensory perception such as smell, color or flavor. King and his family spent two days in the Spring of 2019 visiting Old Salem Museums & Gardens interacting with the exhibitions, trades interpreters, The Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts, and helped prepare a hearthside lunch with us at the historic Tavern.
King’s artistic output for the “Out of Bounds” contemporary projects will express his unique vision and interpretation of Old Salem. This 2019 Fellowship will result in an exhibition and presentation from Mr. Godwin & his Family on his experiences. This “Out of Bounds” contemporary project is a partnership with Old Salem’s ACCESS SALEM INITIATIVE.
